Dr. Edward A. Schmoll
August 26, 2004
Appointed to the Classical Studies Department in 1995, Dr.
Edward Schmoll personally connects his own love of learning with
students, who soon share his passion for the classics as a result
of his enthusiasm. His teaching is infectious and he motivates
students to strive for excellence in his classes.
Dr. Schmoll’s door is always open, whether to offer help on
class subjects or for personal matters, and as a result, students
trust him and feel comfortable in his classes and are eager to
join with him in the learning process. His colleagues say he is
“compassionate when there are difficulties, encouraging when
there is work to do, knowledgeable when one has questions, and
thoughtful when one has ideas to discuss.”
Dr. Schmoll creates a learning environment in which students
are not intimidated or afraid to make mistakes. He is able to
instill confidence in students and works with them to elicit
self-correction. As a result of his tireless individual attention,
students want to work for him and make him proud. Through his
outstanding example as a master teacher, he has inspired many
students to pursue careers as educators, and many have modeled
their teaching styles after his.
Students value his patience, understanding and honesty in both
academic and personal situations and credit him for instilling in
them the capacity to learn on their own. In honor of his ability
to motivate students to reach their potential and for his love of
learning and teaching, Concordia proudly presents Dr. Edward
Schmoll with the Ole and Lucy Flaat Distinguished Teaching Award. |
