Flaat Awards - 2004

The Ole And Lucy Flaat Distinguished Teaching Award

Dr. Edward A. Schmoll

August 26, 2004

Appointed to the Classical Studies Department in 1995, Dr. Edward Schmoll personally connects his own love of learning with students, who soon share his passion for the classics as a result of his enthusiasm. His teaching is infectious and he motivates students to strive for excellence in his classes.

Dr. Schmoll’s door is always open, whether to offer help on class subjects or for personal matters, and as a result, students trust him and feel comfortable in his classes and are eager to join with him in the learning process. His colleagues say he is “compassionate when there are difficulties, encouraging when there is work to do, knowledgeable when one has questions, and thoughtful when one has ideas to discuss.”

Dr. Schmoll creates a learning environment in which students are not intimidated or afraid to make mistakes. He is able to instill confidence in students and works with them to elicit self-correction. As a result of his tireless individual attention, students want to work for him and make him proud. Through his outstanding example as a master teacher, he has inspired many students to pursue careers as educators, and many have modeled their teaching styles after his.

Students value his patience, understanding and honesty in both academic and personal situations and credit him for instilling in them the capacity to learn on their own. In honor of his ability to motivate students to reach their potential and for his love of learning and teaching, Concordia proudly presents Dr. Edward Schmoll with the Ole and Lucy Flaat Distinguished Teaching Award.

The Ole And Lucy Flaat Distinguished Scholarship Award

Dr. Douglas R. Anderson

August 26, 2004

Appointed to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in 1997, Dr. Douglas Anderson has made significant contributions to the field of mathematics in several areas of research, including differential and difference equations, and dynamic equations on measure chains.

He has authored or co-authored more than two dozen articles published in scholarly journals and has made presentations at more than 30 conferences, most recently at the meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Sigurdson Mathematics Symposium. Dr. Anderson has completed these significant scholarly accomplishments while teaching a full range of mathematics, including introductory through upper-level courses.

In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Anderson leads a May Seminar Abroad on alternating years, has advised Habitat for Humanity trips and Justice Journeys, and has ridden with the Cycling Club on its fall bike trip to Duluth, Minnesota.

Dr. Anderson is a dedicated mentor and has worked diligently to encourage the college’s best students to consider graduate school in fields related to mathematics. He challenges himself to make mathematics appealing and to help students “see that math is new, fresh and alive.” In honor of his commitment to excellence in scholarship and in recognition of his representation as the college’s ideal of the scholar-teacher, Concordia proudly presents Dr. Douglas Anderson with the Ole and Lucy Flaat Distinguished Scholarship Award.
