Assessment Committee Minutes
9:20am, Sept. 21, 2001
Present: Mark Jensen, Susan Larson, Michelle Latt, Viann Pederson, Connie
Peterson, Kay Schneider, Jennie Taylor, Mike Wohlfeil
I. The meeting began with introductions of committee members. A regular
meeting time was discussed and it was decided that we would meet every other
Monday at 3pm. The location is yet to be determined.
Future meeting dates are: 10/1, 10/15, 10/29, 11/12, 11/26, and 12/10.
II. The past role of the assessment committee was briefly discussed. Our
principle purpose has been to support and encourage assessment activities
across campus. The committee's primary responsibilities have included:
- providing feedback to departments at their request on departmental
assessment plans
- reviewing assessment grant applications
- hosting workshops and banquets that provide information regarding
assessment to the campus community, and that provide an opportunity for
dialogue on assessment
III. Kay Schneider gave us an update on current assessment activities:
- A series of workshops has been scheduled for the month of October.
This schedule has been sent to all faculty. Committee members are
encouraged to attend and actively participate.
- Approximately 600 new students have completed the academic profile
test.
- An assessment handbook has been prepared as is available to
departments.
IV. Kay and Mike Wohlfeil discussed the possibility of expanding the role
of the committee in various ways:
- Mike discussed the upcoming HLC accreditation process and ways in
which this committee may become more involved. One possibility may be to
give this committee the responsibility of providing feedback to
departments regarding the assessment portion of the annual reports
submitted to the Dean's office.
- Mike explained how all departments are being asked to complete a
"Levels of Implementation" analysis sheet that indicates where
the department is at in the process of developing and implementing their
assessment plans. Connie Peterson suggested that this analysis sheet be
included in a department's annual report.
- Mike and Kay suggested that this committee could become more active in
reviewing assessment data taken from the college as a whole (e.g.,
academic profile testing).
- Kay is interested in developing a web/email survey of students
regarding various aspects of student learning. She would like input from
the committee as this develops.
- Kay has plans to put together a campus-wide "fact book" with
various statistics regarding the campus community that may be of
interest/use to various people/groups across campus.
The next meeting will be Monday, October 1 at 3pm.
The meeting adjourned at 10:15.
