Assessment Committee Meeting October 1, 2001 Present: Mark Jensen, Susan Larson, Michelle Latt, Viann Pederson, Connie Peterson, Don Rice, Kay Schneider, Jennie Taylor, Mike Wohlfeil 1. We discussed posting our committee minutes on the www.fac server. One disadvantage is that users have to log in and use the ccm domain to access materials, yet it would be useful to share our minutes. Mark Jensen will contact Keith Landa regarding posting of minutes 2. We reviewed a draft of the senior survey and the sample ACT Survey. We discussed sample sizes and return rate concerns and wondered if departments could administer the survey in their classes. Several changes to the survey were suggested. Another draft will be distributed to the committee for review. Kay will follow up with the Core committee to see if they would like to include assessment of the Core as part of this assessment instrument. We also discussed the "assessment day" concept as a method for engaging faculty and students in assessment activities. 3. We discussed whether our committee should review information from department annual reports. We questioned whether our committee was the intended audience when faculty were asked to submit a report. We want to provide positive feedback and suggestions for things to consider but do not want to conduct an evaluation of the information. Could this new role for the assessment committee be a mandate from the Senate Coordinating Committee? (Mike will follow up with the Deans about this.) We could send a letter to chairs, requesting that they submit an assessment plan to us, or to ask for permission to look at the assessment section of the annual report, so that departments do not need to submit a separate report. We need to document changes that have been made as a result of assessment information but we need to emphasize that we do not need to or want to look at department's data. 4.
