Concordia College Assessment Committee Minutes

January 26, 2004, 2:40-3:40, Old Main 126

Members Present: Marilyn Guy, Betty Larson, Mary F.D. Larson, Kathie Leeper, Ruth Lumb, Viann Pederson, Kay Schneider, Michael Wohlfeil (Chairperson)

Comments from departments regarding memo seeking assessment coordinators:   There has been a bit of resistance to the idea of appointing a departmental assessment coordinator in some departments.  However, the list of coordinators is growing and division chairs will be asked to help us recruit in cases where the department does not appoint someone.  Some good news is that there are already 18 people signed up to attend the assessment banquet.

Annual report guidelines:  The annual report guidelines were revised to include the following instructions:

  1. List your department/program’s most important goals for student learning and the corresponding measurable student learning outcomes.

2.    Describe your department/program’s plan to assess these student learning outcomes.  The plan should identify the specific methods for data collection and analysis and will ideally include both direct and indirect measures of student learning.  The plan should also include a timeline for implementation.

3.       Identify the assessment activities that your program has used in the past year.

4.       Describe how your program is using assessment results to improve student learning.

Kay will develop a handout, including samples from current department reports, as an attachment to these report guidelines.

Report to Senate:  Mike distributed a draft of a report for submission to Senate at the  February 16 meeting.  Comments are welcome.

Summer workshops:  The committee would like to propose summer workshop(s) as a way of encouraging faculty to work on development and implementation of assessment plans.  Proposals for workshops are due in the Dean’s office on February 9.  A draft of text is below; comments are welcome.

The Assessment Committee is offering summer workshops to enable faculty to develop and implement their departmental assessment plans.  The workshop will be tailored so that all faculty may participate, regardless of where they are in the assessment process.

Monthly workshops:  This will be a discussion item at the next meeting.

Next Meeting:  The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2004 at 2:40 in room 126 of Old Main.  We will meet weekly until further notice.

Respectfully submitted,

Kay Schneider
