Assessment Committee Minutes

October 23, 2003

Members Present:  Kathleen Curtis, Mary  Larson, Kay Schneider, Kathie Leeper, Ruth Lumb, Viann Pederson de Castaneda, Michael Wohlfeil

1.  We welcomed and introduced the new student member, Kathleen Curtis.

2.  Mike Wohlfeil distributed the memo from our committee which was sent to the Core committee.  He indicated that the Core committee was receptive to our comments and may include the assessment committee in the process of goal development for the new curriculum.

3.  Committee members discussed the application of a mini-grant from the wellness program.  Suggestions for strengthening their assessment efforts will be forwarded, along with our approval of the application.  The committee also reviewed and approved a grant application to support the Spanish Department’s primary traits analysis assessment and their development of the assessment report.

4.  The committee reviewed a sample departmental assessment report to determine how well the plan addresses the four areas for the assessment of student learning.  Subgroups were formed to review the remaining departmental reports, with a targeted completion date of December 11. At that time, the entire committee will review the responses.

The comment form for reviewing reports was distributed.  Kay agreed to e-mail last year’s comments from the committee to the current committee members.  Subgroups are encouraged to meet on November 13, which is our next scheduled assessment meeting time.  A committee-wide meeting will not be held on that date.  Subgroups were formed and reports were assigned as follows:

Mike sent a query to department chairs asking about the helpfulness of past year’s responses from our committee, but received only one response.  We will include a feedback form with the responses that we send this year, in attempt to prompt departments to respond to our feedback.

5.  Next meeting:    December 11, 2003.

Respectfully submitted,

Kay Schneider
