Concordia College Assessment Committee Minutes

January 19, 2004, 2:40-3:40, Old Main 126

Members Present:  Marilyn Guy, Betty Larson, Kathie Leeper, Ruth Lumb, Kay Schneider, Viann Pederson, Michael Wohlfeil (Chairperson)

A revised cover letter for providing feedback to departments was reviewed.  A subcommittee made numerous revisions on January 16 to incorporate the assessment concerns from the Higher Learning Commission report.  Several additional suggestions were made.  The cover letter will be revised again to incorporate the suggestions of the committee.  Kay Schneider will review the previously created comments and adjust them to reflect the report from the Higher Learning Commission and will send them to department chairs.

The charge from the Senate Coordinating Committee was distributed.  At its January 14 meeting, the SCC “decided it will encourage Assessment [Committee] to come up with a timeline to monitor progress and report compliance of the development and implementation of assessment plans in the various departments.  The dean also noted that February 1, 2006 is the deadline for a report that goes to the Higher Learning Commission, and this is also a part of the Assessment Committees concerns and the need to make sure we do not forget this deadline and have a plan to meet it.”

A tentative process to monitor all departments to implement a complete cycle of assessment was considered.  We will ask each department to designate an assessment coordinator, who will attend monthly required meetings on assessment during February, March, and April.  The assessment banquet will focus on the Higher Learning Commission report, specifically focusing on assessment and the plan to address the concern.  Ideally, the division chairs will be involved as necessary to ensure that departments are making adequate progress and meeting their obligations to this task.  We will attempt to follow the timeline identified in the Higher Learning Commission report, which requires all departments to have an approved assessment plan by September 1.

Summer workshops on assessment will be proposed.  The hope is that these meetings will be primarily working sessions for departments.  The deadline for proposals is February 9.

The focus of the January 26 meeting will be the revision of the annual report guidelines.

Next Meeting:  The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 26, 2:40, in Old Main 126.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael D. Wohlfeil
