Concordia College Assessment Committee Minutes

February 2, 2004

Members Present: Betty Larson, Mary F. D. Larson, Ruth Lumb, Viann Pederson, Michael Wohlfeil (Chairperson), Kay Schneider, Kathie Leeper

Summer Assessment Workshops: The assessment committee, through Kay, will propose summer workshops to enable faculty to develop and implement their departmental assessment plans.  It will consist of focused time as well as allowing teams of faculty from individual departments to work on their own assessment plans regardless of where they currently are.   It will be proposed for the first or second week of June.

Possible structure discussed included beginning the day with what departments need to work on, lunch, then working as a department to develop the plan and approaches.  Suggestion was made to have somebody and/or materials available for assistance as well as possible workshop leaders.

Monthly Workshops: The schedule for the monthly workshops was discussed.  The February workshops will be Tuesday, February 24 at noon and Wednesday, February 25 from 2:40 – 3:40.  The first workshop will discuss the HLC and the expected goals and outcomes.  It will discuss what a complete cycle of assessment entails and what is expected in measurable objectives.  The March workshop will focus on instruments and methods of measuring.  For the April meeting, departments will be asked to bring back instruments and methodologies as part of the discussion of data reporting and critiquing instruments.

Draft of Response from HLC: The Draft Review will be taken to the department chairs for their recommendations prior to taking it to Senate.

Program Review: The committee will begin looking at options of how to bring program assessment/self-study guidelines into alignment with our current assessment process.  As a result, we will contact other institutions including St. Thomas, Augustana, Alverno, Albion, St. Catherine’s, and similar institutions.  As we work toward preparing a new document by the end of the semester, each of us will bring or share the URL for a copy of materials used by other colleges for our next meeting.

Recognition: The possibility of some kind of recognition of departmental progress was discussed.

Next Meeting:  The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 16, 2004, at 2:40 in room 126 of Old Main.

Respectfully submitted,
