Members Present: D. Sandgren, M. Burchill, L. Sethre-Hofstad, A. Ingberg, G. Muilenburg, S. Schwartz, D. Anderson

After introductions and a welcome to our new member, M. Burchill suggested that current appeals be discussed as the first item of business. Responsibility for keeping the Minutes of the Core Committee will be shared by the members alphabetically beginning with D. Anderson.

1)  Appeals

   a)   ***** – To allow integration course taken as a sophomore to count toward core distribution integration credit– GRANTED.

   b)   ***** – World language exemption due to dyslexia– GRANTED, with expectation that ***** take a world culture course in its place.

c)      ***** – To allow both the credit and the grade from IWC 120 to replace the grade/credit of IWC 100. The English department has already compromised to allow the credit from IWC 120 to count for IWC 100. The grade is an issue for the Registrar’s Office, not Core Committee. No jurisdiction, so no action.

d)     ***** – To substitute World Discovery 380 for Scan 272E as an E distribution course and core credit-GRANTED.

e)      ***** – Appeal was tabled due to insufficient information, no junior check sheet, no updated degree audit.

2)  Regarding new integration X distribution courses

There remain three spring semesters in which integration X distribution courses need to be offered for current students to complete the former core curriculum. Credo World Discovery 380 for Credo in Crete students and English 401 Shakespeare in Film are two possible new courses that may be submitted for Integration X designation under the former core.

3)  Education 425 and 439 as U.S. cultural diversity courses

Education 425 U and Education 439 U, both 0.5 course credits, have U designation (U.S. Cultural Diversity), thus together satisfy the U requirement of the new core, Becoming Responsibly Engaged in the World. Since both are required courses for education and secondary education majors, we do not feel a student will take only one and expect to satisfy this core requirement. One full (1.0) course credit is needed.

4)  Email reminder of important submission dates

A Cobweb Express email should be sent to all faculty with a link to the Core Committee website, highlighting two key dates: September 25, by which all courses applying for Exploration or Perspectives designation to be included in the Spring 2008 class schedule for the first time need to be submitted using the Standard Form; January 15, by which all courses previously granted provisional approval on the Short Form need to be resubmitted using the Standard Form for inclusion in future class schedules.

5)  Inquiry seminars

There seems to be a need to establish a mechanism whereby uniformity in “intensive writing” is attained in Inq 100 Inquiry Seminar. If the task force headed by David Sprunger defines writing intensive, who will oversee the implementation of the definition across the inquiry seminar sections? Can Core Committee do this, or should there be a Director of the First-Year Experience generally? When and to whom will inquiry seminar course proposals be submitted?

6)  Religion representation on the Core committee

As Religion II is an Exploration area in the new core curriculum, we have discussed in the past the idea of necessary legislation for a reconstitution of our committee’s makeup to allow for representation by religion. Senate coordinating committee will be contacted to pursue this idea.

The next meeting of the Core Committee will be Tuesday, September 18 at 8:00 am in the executive conference room in Lorentzsen.

Respectfully submitted,

Douglas Anderson
