Core Committee

September 18, 2007

Members present: D. Anderson, A. Ingberg, D. Sandgren, L. Sethre-Hofstad, G. Muilenburg, P. Fretham, S. Schwartz, M. Burchill

The meeting opened with a welcome to our two student members, Sara Schwartz and Paul Fretham. Paul is replacing Sheena Patel.

The first order of business was a reconsideration of the appeal of *&^%$. The committee had requested more complete documentation from the Registrar. According to the Degree Audit, *&^%$ took and passed P SC 111.  This course, considered together with the other Distribution courses, does satisfy the Distribution requirement, rendering the appeal moot.

The next order of business was the consideration of two courses being put forward for Exploration credit on the Short Form. These courses were held over from last spring. SOC 351, Aging in Society was approved. SOC 312, Global Development Issues is being returned to the originator for clarification.

Discussion ensued regarding the role and application of 300-level courses in the new Core:

·        Can 300-level courses be major specific?

·        Is it possible to have a course in the Core that has a prerequisite, which is also in the Core?

·        What are the intent and purpose of the 300-level requirement?

·        Should 300-level courses offered for Exploration credit not be allowed to be a required course in the major?

The committee will further define this understanding as we work through the course proposals submitted.

Doug Anderson presented the revised Math 102 proposal and refreshed the background of this issue for the benefit of our new student members. This was originally addressed last year, when Core committee did not accept Math 102 in satisfaction of the Core Mathematics requirement. In an attempt to balance the goals of the new curriculum with the needs of the Education Department, the Committee will revisit the record of the discussions in Senate, as well as our own considerations from last year as we formulate an informed response to this proposal.

The next meeting of the Core Committee will be Thursday, September 20.

Respectfully submitted,

MBurchill
