Members present: D. Anderson, A. Ingberg, D. Sandgren, L. Sethre-Hofstad, G. Muilenburg,

P. Fretham, S. Schwartz, M. Burchill

The first meeting of the second semester opened with the distribution of the first set of course proposals submitted for approval. At our next meeting we will begin working on the proposals held over from the end of last semester and then move forward on this set.

An appeal was discussed and denied. +-*/% appealed to have the Exploration requirement in the E distribution area waived, because +-*/%’s skills in the Art 111 course, which +-*/% is currently taking, exceed the course expectations. The committee saw no grounds for the appeal and noted a lack of understanding of the Core process on all parties attached to the appeal. +-*/% was advised to select a course from a department other than Art to satisfy the requirement, or to decide to complete the 111 course +-*/% has begun.

MBurchill brought a list of topics that will need to be addressed on this semester’s agenda. After discussion some others were added. The list includes the following:

The adoption of the Capstone Course was seen as especially pressing, since those courses will have to be made available in the 2009-2010 academic year. That is integrally connected to considerations of calendar change. MBurchill will write a note to the Dean expressing our eagerness to see the discussion begun and what our role in implementation should be.

MBurchill will also forward to Doug Anderson the form the Religion Department has been using for their Exploration courses, so that it might be posted on the website.

The Committee will in all likelihood have to maintain the two times a week meeting schedule into at least February in order to complete consideration of the proposals submitted in time for the schedule publication.
