Core Committee

January 22, 2008

Members present: L Sethre-Hofstad, M Burchilll, P, Fretham, S Schwarts, D. Anderson, A. Ingberg, D. Sandgren

Scandinavian Studies Intro will be offered in Fall of 08.  Lisa Sethre-Hofstad will submit a proposal for Exploration credit, based on last spring’s syllabus, in time for the February 15 deadline.

The committee discussed the number and distribution among departments and divisions of 300-level Exploration classes.  The History department is gathering data on student perceptions of courses that carry multiple core designations.  If students perceive such courses as “super-courses,” enrolment may be negatively affected.  On the other hand, students with science majors tend to find only a small number of applicable 300-level Exploration courses.  The number of offerings in Social Science seems especially low at present, although this may be partly because our committee tried to stagger the applications by discouraging proposals for 300-level courses in the first round.  Some applications for Chemistry courses are also expected this semester.

Discussion of Course Proposals:

Chinese 211, Intermediate Chinese I

Approved for World Language Exploration Designation

History 337, History of Scandinavia (future title: Reel Norden)

Approved for Humanities Exploration Designation; clarification requested for

International and Global Perspectives Designation

PoliSci 367, Arctic Nations, Arctic Issues

Approved for International and Global Perspectives Designation, assuming

approval by Curriculum Committee (the syllabus submitted with the application

was for a 380 course)
