Core Committee Minutes

January 29, 2008

Lorentzsen Conference Room, 8:00 a.m.

Members present: D. Anderson, M. Burchill, A. Ingberg, D. Sandgren, L Sethre-Hofstad, G. Muilenburg, S. Schwartz

Discussion began about a previously-denied appeal from student, %^&*.  Dean Krejci was asked to reconsider our decision, but agreed with the reasoning of the Core committee. Denial of the original appeal was upheld.

*&& ^%$#, Bachelor of Music student:  *&& had contacted Maddy Burchill about a double major in Music and Religion, under the B.M. degree.  Discussion ensued regarding whether or not majors outside of music could be granted under the B. M. degree.    It was decided to follow up with the Registrar’s office, and the item was tabled.

Doug Anderson made a motion to SCC regarding a waiver of the 10-course cap, and the requirement to take 300-level exploration only as juniors or seniors.  It was agreed that this proposal has implications for Core requirements in the future, and was raised as a point of discussion.  No official action was taken.

Discussion surrounding global education programs:  For on-site courses taught by Concordia College faculty, the question was raised as to whether or not the courses need to come to the Core committee (solely because of abroad status).  Per Anderson indicated to Maddy Burchill that the precedent set is to provide a “modification of course” to the curriculum committee.  It was unclear to the committee whether or not this was happening uniformly across campus.  The core committee agreed that the courses do not need to be brought to the Core committee unless the course goals and outcomes have changed.

Courses discussed for Core approval:

1.  Revisions submitted by Joy Lintelman for Hist/Scan 337 on the International/Global designation were unanimously approved.

2.  G. Connell’s revision of question #3 for Phil 314 was unanimously approved.

3.  Richard Gilmore’s proposal for Phil. 333 as Arts/Humanities designation was approved.

4.  Nursing 401 (P. Kloster):  Extensive revisions were requested.  Not approved.

5.  Intercultural Communication 316 was submitted by Hank Tkachuk for consideration for U.S. Cultural Diversity.  The course has already been approved for International/Global designation.  The committee discussed whether or not a course should received perspectives designation for both, and feedback to that end was returned to the department.  Not approved.

6.  Chem 174 (D. Mork):  application was incomplete (lab syllabus was missing), and more information was requested.  Not approved.

7.  Math 311 (D. Anderson): unanimously approved.

8.  Chem 201 (P. Mork):  Revisions on questions #2 and #3 were requested.  Concerns were raised about the title of the course “Forensic Science: Dead men do tell tales”.

The next meeting will be Thursday January 31, 2008, at 8:00 a.m..  Meeting was adjourned at 9:40.

Respectfully submitted,

                Lisa Sethre-Hofstad, PhD.
