The
committee opened with consideration of *&#%&*’s appeal for a Religion J
course. We are distressed that along with the normal indicator (J designation),
two checklists (Junior and Senior), an on-line tracking system (Degree
Navigator) and the close monitoring the Department in question practices in advising, this omission was
not recognized before the final semester
of a five year course of study! In this instance however, we have granted the
appeal. Our action is not to be considered a precedent, or a weakening of our
commitment to this important Core requirement, but rather acknowledgment of the
particular set of circumstances, the role of the advisor in the omission, and
the hardship our failure to grant the appeal would impose on the student.
MBurchill will convey these sentiments to
the registrar, advisor and chair of the Nursing Program. Also, MBurchill will
suggest to the Religion Department that each syllabus indicate which CORE requirement the
course satisfies.
It will also be suggested to the
Registrar, that while the courses listed in the schedule are clearly marked
with the J, they are not so marked in the catalog! Could all courses which
satisfy a Core requirement carry that indication in the catalog also?
The Committee’s response to the rejection
of the Com 316 course for US Cultural Diversity Perspectives was accepted and
will be sent today.
The requested syllabus for Religion 314, Paul: Apostle or Apostate was
distributed, and considered. The course was approved for Religion II
designation.
In addition Scan 201: Scandinavia in the
Modern World was accepted for both Exploration (Humanities) and International
and Global Perspectives.
The list of approved courses from our spring
deliberations (to be included in the fall 2008 schedule) was finalized and
distributed. After MBurchill has checked with the Curriculum Committee, to
assure the status of new courses, the list will be forwarded to the Registrar.
It was also decided that a line will be added to each of the Course application
forms asking if and when the course seeking Core approval has been approved by
the Curriculum Committee.
The next meeting will be held after
break. MBurchill will notify the committee of issues pending and meeting date.
It was suggested that one timely issue that needs to be addressed is
establishing process and expectations for the Inquiry Seminars.
Respectfully submitted,
MBurchill
