Meeting convened at 8:30 am. Approved minutes of meeting of September 26.

The first order of business was a discussion of a request for a change of course number from CFS 235 (Family Health) to CFS 335. The modification is being made because of changes in content, in particular a stronger emphasis on critical analysis from the original course. After discussion and review of syllabus, the committee had difficulty finding evidence of substantial changes that would warrant upper division credit. To gain more background in the discipline, we decided to schedule Barbara Ronningen Torgerson to come to our next meeting for a brief discussion of the syllabus before granting approval.

The next request was regarding REL 348 – Environmental Ethics. The course title was modified to “Ethics of Sustainable Community” to conform with the environmental studies program curriculum and to reflect more precisely the field of  study. The change was unanimously approved. Thereafter, the pre-May seminar MUS 250 and May seminar MUS 350 changed its focus and location from Indonesian music in Indonesia to African drumming and dancing in Ghana. This change was also unanimously approved.

Finally, several changes in the various majors in art were requested, primarily because of a change in the art history course sequence from a single art course (ART 155) to a two-semester sequence (ART 155-156). For the Pre-professional concentration in Graphic Design, the request was to allow students to take Art 155 (History in Art I) OR ART 156 (History in Art II). In addition the requirement for photography should be revised to give students the choice to take ART 236 Photography OR ART 368 Digital Photography. Majors in Art history would be required to take both ART 155 and 156, but the number of supporting courses from languages, history, etc. will be reduced from two to one, and this course will be PHIL 333: Philosophy of Art. For art majors in the history track in general art, students would also need to take ART 155 and 156, but the number of studio electives would be reduced from two to one. These changes were unanimously approved.

We adjourned at 9:45 after tentatively agreeing on new meeting times to best accommodate all committee members (Monday mornings 7:45-8:45 am or Wednesdays 5:15-6:15pm).

Respectfully Submitted,

Stephen Grollman
