Curriculum Committee Minutes

 

Members present: David Boggs, Susan Cordes Green, Karissa Enger, Stephen Grollman, Gregg Muilenburg, Logan Richman, Elna Solvang (Chair), Bill Todt

The minutes for November 28 were approved.

All of the curriculum committee business covered on this day came from the Music department. Changes in major requirements were requested for the following majors:

  1. Bachelor of Music in Music Education:  Vocal Emphasis.
  2. Bachelor of Arts in Music Education:  Vocal Emphasis
  3. Bachelor of Music in Music Education: Instrumental Emphasis
  4. Bachelor of Arts in Music Education: Instrumental Emphasis

1. Change in Requirements for Major: Bachelor of Music in Music Education:  Vocal Emphasis:

A. delete PE 112:  Social Dance from the list of course requirements. rationale: BOT Standard of Effective Practice 8710.4650 3A6 (demonstrating physical response to music through dance) is covered in ED 391:  Methods of Teaching Vocal Music

B. delete ED 393: Methods in Instrumental Music from the list of requirements. rationale: ED 393 is redundant for vocal music education majors because:

i. BOT Standard 3B4 (interpreting vocal and instrumental scores and understand percussion, string or wind instrument requirements for interpreting and producing music from scores) is being met in MUS 394: String and Woodwind Techniques and MUS 395: Brass and Percussion Techniques.

ii. the general education topics covered in ED 393 are taught in ED 391: Methods of Teaching Vocal Music.

C. remove MUS 343: Instrumentation from the list of course requirements. rationale:  MUS 343 is redundant because orchestral and band instruments are being studied in MUS 394: String and Woodwind Techniques and MUS 395: Brass and Percussion Techniques

 

Total credits would be reduced from 33 to 32

 

These changes were approved.

 

2. Change in Requirements for Major: Bachelor of Arts in Music Education: Vocal Emphasis

A. PE 112:  Social Dance be deleted from the list of course requirements. rationale: BOT Standard of Effective Practice 8710.4650 3A6 (demonstrating physical response to music through dance) is covered in ED 391:  Methods of Teaching Vocal Music

B. ED 393: Methods in Instrumental Music be deleted from the list of requirements. 

rationale: ED 393 is redundant for vocal music education majors because:

i.  BOT Standard 3B4 (interpreting vocal and instrumental scores and understand percussion, string or wind instrument requirements for interpreting and producing music from scores) is being met in MUS 394: String and Woodwind Techniques and MUS 395: Brass and Percussion Techniques.

ii.   the general education topics covered in ED 393 are taught in ED 391: Methods of Teaching Vocal Music.

 

Total credits would be reduced from 33.50 to 32.50

 

These changes were approved.

 

3. Change in Requirements for Major: Bachelor of Music in Music Education: Instrumental Emphasis

 

Delete PE 112:  Social Dance from the list of course requirements. rationale: BOT Standard of Effective Practice 8710.4650 3A6 (demonstrating physical response to music through dance) is covered in ED 391:  Methods of Teaching Vocal Music

 

This change was approved.

 

4. Change in Requirements for Major: Bachelor of Arts in Music Education: Instrumental Emphasis

This change was approved.

 

One request still pending: Spanish and Education requested a Study Abroad/Language Immersion Requirement of a minimum of one semester of study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country for all Spanish majors including Spanish education. This request was tabled until the committee hears from Mary Rice and Sue Ellingson.
