Curriculum Committee Minutes

Members present: Susan Cordes Green, Karissa Enger, Stephen Grollman, Gregg Muilenburg, Logan Richman, Elna Solvang (Chair), Bill Todt, Jonathan Steinwand

The first item of business was a continuation of world languages changes, in this case a request for change in Requirements for Russian Studies Major with Teaching License, grades K-12. As with the other languages from last week, the request was to Substitute EDUC 362 – Secondary Methods of Teaching in World Languages (1 credit) for EDUC 388 – Methods of Teaching in Modern and Classical Languages (.5 credit).  The number of required credits will move from 9 credits to 9.5 credits. This change was unanimously approved.

The next items of business involved a series of similar changes to requirements in 8 majors of the music department. On the proposed requirements for all the majors, the committee found inconsistencies in course numbers in music core courses. We suggested that the department substitute the pending new  course numbers for the following courses:

MUS 128 Aural Skills I (.5)

MUS 225, Aural Skills II  (.5)

MUS 226   Aural Skills III (.5)

We also requested for all majors that at the bottom of the list, the words non-major credits, should replace "non-music", as some courses referred to may not be music courses. The requests for changes and further corrections and approvals are listed below:

 1. Change in Requirements for Major: Bachelor of Arts in Music

The change in the major involved the following:

·         Incorporate the new music core

·         increase Music Electives from 1.0 to 2.0; decrease private instruction from 2.5 to 2.0

The committee suggested the following corrections:

·         After the course history of Western Music, the words "meets Exploration requirement." should be deleted, as the exploration course has not yet been approved.

The Curriculum Committee approved the changes in requirements pending approval of the courses being modified and any new courses.

 2. Change in Requirements for Major: Bachelor of Arts in Music Education: Instrumental Emphasis

The committee asked for clarification on the name of the major: The title on the recommendation reads "Bachelor of Music: Instrumental Emphasis" but the title on the Proposed Requirements lists BM Performance (Instrumental) Major.  It is the committee's understanding that the first is the correct one and that the department is not proposing a change in the name of the major.  Is "Emphasis" supposed to be in the title of the Major?

The Curriculum Committee approved the changes in requirements pending approval of the courses being modified.

The Curriculum Committee approved the changes in requirements pending approval of the courses being modified.

The final item of business concerned a modification in the course Psyc 234: Drugs and Behavior. The department requests changing the prerequisite to Psyc 321 Introduction to Physiological Psychology or Bio 121 Vertebrate Biology or consent of instructor. This change was approved

Our last item was a request from Sociology to change the title of SOC 312 from "Socioeconomics of Human Population" to "Global Development issues" and the course description to: "Students are introduced to the social scientific approaches used to understand how demographic, institutional, cultural, economic, and ecological factors influence, and are influenced by, societal development. Comparative case studies enable students to understand the structure and dynamics (e.g. population change) of human population as they relate to a socioeconomic development." These changes was approved.
