Approval of Minutes of February 6 meeting

Although the new neuroscience minor had been approved by Curriculum Committee February 6, 2007, the committee felt it necessary to clarify some language in the list of requirements. The original requirements for the minor identified the 2 credits of electives that students are to select as "supporting courses," while Biology 101 or 121 and Chemistry 142 or 373, which are supporting courses for the minor, were included in the proposal but not in the listing of requirements for the minor. The text below is meant to clarify this ambiguous wording (underlined words = new language):

Proposed New Minor: Neuroscience Minor of 5.5 credits to include:

Introduction to Neuroscience (1 cr.)

Introduction to Neuroscience Lab (0 cr)

Neurobiology or Psyc 319 Behavioral Neuroscience (1 cr)

Neurochemistry or Psyc 324 Drugs and Behavior (1 cr)

Senior Seminar (.5)

with two additional supporting courses (from a list of Neuro Courses or a list of Chem, Bio, and Psych courses)

The Neuro courses: Physical Neuroscience (1 credit), Neurophysiology (.5 credit), Neurochemistry (1 credit), Special Topics (NEURO 380), Human Neuropsychology (1 credit)

The Chem, Biology and Psych courses: Chem 373 or 374 (Biochemistry I, II), Bio 306 (Anatomy and Physiology), Bio 345 (Molecular Biology), Bio 380 (Special Topics: Animal Behavior), Bio 415 (Genetics), Psyc 318 (Learning and Behavior), Psyc 319 (Behavioral Neuroscience), Psyc 323 (Perception), Psyc 361 (Cognition)

Required supporting courses: Biology 101 or 121; Chemistry 142 or 373

This change was approved.

The next two items were new course proposals for the Neuroscience minor.

  1. NEU 109: Introduction to Neuroscience.

  2. NEU 252 Physical Neuroscience

Both courses were approved.

The physics department brought up the next two items. First, they submitted a new course proposal for PHYS 430 : Senior Seminar. This course was approved. Second, they suggested a change in requirements for the Physics major: to add PHYS 430 – Senior Seminar and Senior Thesis. This change was approved with a request for clarification on the number of required credits.

The next item involved  course modifications in English:  Changes in Course Descriptions for ENG 112, ENG 227, ENG 230, ENG 316, ENG 324, ENG 353, ENG 390, ENG 419, ENG 420, ENG 480, ENG 489. These changes were approved.

The education department submitted the final item, a course modification for EDUC 439. following changes were requested

These changes were approved.

The committee adjourned shortly after 5:30pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Stephen Grollman
