8 July: Summer Curriculum Task Force update
From: Summer Curriculum Task Force
To: All Faculty
Date: 8 July 2003
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
We wish to report that work toward the development of curricular models is
now well along. Meetings to date have been devoted to questions of liberal
learning principles and goals. We have examined both internal and external
documents relating to curricular philosophy and assessment. We have given
special attention to the new national panel report, Greater Expectations, and
have benefited from critical conversation with its claims and proposals. At this
writing, we are developing six principles of liberal learning at Concordia.
Stated in terms still subject to revision, these principles call for a
curriculum that seeks to engender: 1) love of learning; 2) foundational,
transferable intellectual capacities; 3) understanding and integration of
multiple perspectives (disciplinary, interdisciplinary, intercultural); 4)
informed moral, religious, and cultural self-understanding; 5) responsible
participation in the world; and 6) life-long learning. We are currently working
in small groups to formulate narrative definitions of these principles along
with specific learning goals and expected outcomes. At our next meeting, we will
begin to consider the curricular goals and models proposed by the Core Committee
and Core Task Force and the First-Year Experience Task Force (2003) and by Team
III (2000).
We encourage you to share your questions and ideas with any of us. If you
wish to comment on the task force reports submitted to the Faculty Senate in
late April, we would welcome your response.

2 July: Fall Symposium, October 26 and 27
To: Faculty and Staff
From: Sabine O'Hara Academic Vice President and Dean of the College
Re: Fall Symposium, October 26 and 27
The theme for this year's fall symposium is "The Liberally Educated
Person: Rethinking the tradition in the 21st century." Given the late start
of our symposium preparations following this year's Peace Prize Forum the
symposium format is somewhat different than in the past and presents Part I of a
symposium theme on the effect of the reformation on education. The symposium
will open with a reformation service on Sunday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. in
Memorial Auditorium. Our guest preacher is Roland Martinson, faculty member at
Luther Seminary and member of our Board of Regents. Dr. Martinson will also lead
a Monday evening discussion on Concordia's statement of purpose - The Purpose of
a Lutheran College. Our keynote speaker for the symposium convocation on Monday,
Oct. 27, is Kerstin Gaefgen-Treck, a German theologian who is responsible for
'church and education' issues of the EKD (Evangelische Kirche Deutschland), the
Protestant Church of Germany. Her address will provide a historical context of
education in the reformation tradition. We are also fortunate to be able to host
part of Emory University 's Reformation Exhibit and to welcome Emory's curator
Pat Graham.
A preliminary schedule of symposium events is attached. My sincere thanks to
members of the symposium steering committee, Lowell Larson, Vince Arnold, Jim
Aageson, Bruce Anderson, Helen Cermak, George Connell, Gretchen Person and Roy
Hammerling for their input and ideas in designing this multi-part symposium on
"The Liberally Educated Person: Rethinking the tradition in the 21st
century." We look forward to your participation in these upcoming events.

Summer Curriculum Task Force
13 June 2003
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
We wish to report that our task force held an organizational meeting this
week and has begun its work. We will meet again on June 27 to identify learning
goals for the curricular models that we intend to develop over the next two
months. At this point, our reflection and conversation will focus upon these
curricular documents: An Agenda for Concordia’s Academic Life (1984),
Curricular Review Reports I, II, and III (1999, 2000, 2001), the Concordia
College Strategic Plan (2001), and the Association of American Colleges and
Universities national panel report, Greater Expectations: A New Vision for
Learning as a Nation Goes to College (2002). We will also consider assessment
and retention research provided by Mary F.D. Larson and Kay Schneider. Liz
Connor and Aaron Eckhoff, SA President and Vice President, will serve as student
representatives on the task force.
We will continue to provide updates as our work continues. We encourage you
to share your questions and ideas with task force members. If you wish to
comment on the reports submitted to the Faculty Senate in late April by the Core
Committee and Core Task Force and the First-Year Curriculum Task Force, we would
welcome your response.
