28 September - Dean Search Committee Faculty Nominations

Yesterday (27 September) Faculty Senate approved the motion below concerning the process for selecting faculty to serve on the search committee for the new Dean/VP for Academic Affairs. The first step in the process of faculty selection is to request self-nominations from eligible faculty willing to serve on the search committee. This will be followed by two rounds of balloting to select the faculty representatives to the committee.

If you are interested in serving on the Dean search committee, forward your self-nomination in person or by email to any of the members of the Senate Coordinating Committee:

-Per Anderson

-Polly Fassinger

-Roy Hammerling

-Cathy McMullen

-Carol Pratt

-Mark Krejci

Senate motion:

1. First-round nominations open on September 28, 2004 and close on October 1, 2004. We urge faculty to encourage people to be on the committee, but everyone on the ballot must be self- nominated in order to insure that the person is willing to serve.

2. People who are eligible to serve are defined in paragraphs 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, and 2.5 in the Faculty Constitution which reads, “The faculty, for the purpose of governance, shall be defined as the following: 2.1 Tenured or tenure eligible faculty: Individuals on full-time or part-time appointments who teach courses for credit and hold an academic rank of instructor, assistant professor, associate professor or professor. 2.2 Multiyear fixed-term appointment faculty: Individuals on half-time or more appointments who teach courses for credit and hold and academic rank of instructor, assistant professor, associate professor or professor. 2.3 Continuing non-tenure track appointment: Individuals on half-time or more appointments who teach courses for credit, and hold an academic rank of instructor or assistant professor. 2.4 Lecturer Faculty: Individuals who hold a half-time or more appointment as lecturer or senior-lecturer. 2.5 Library Faculty: Individuals who hold a graduate degree in library science and hold a half-time or more appointment as professional librarians.”

3. The ballot will allow people to vote for five eligible candidates during the dates of October 4-6, 2004.

4. The ten people receiving the most votes on the first ballot will be on the second ballot to be voted on Oct. 8-12, 2004. The top five vote getters will be on the dean search committee.

27 September - Core Requirements

Colleagues:

This is a reminder that last year the Core Committee established a new procedure for students who wish to appeal the Core requirements. The procedure is listed on the faculty log-in page of the Registrar's web site. After you log on, please click on the "Advisement" link, then click on the "Appeal of Core Requirements" link. The procedure is as follows:

a. Students will pick up the "Appeal of Core Requirements" form directly from the Registrar at the Registrar's Office.

b. The student and his/her adviser will fill out the form and submit it to the Registrar.

c. The Registrar and the Chair of Core Division will review the appeal and make recommendations to the Core Committee.

d. The Core Committee will then vote on the appeal.

e. If the student wishes to appeal the decision of the Core Committee, the Registrar will direct that appeal to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Vice President of Academic Affairs has final authority.

Questions regarding appeal of Core requirements should be directed to the Registrar or the Core Committee.

Best wishes,

Mark Jensen Chair, Core Committee

14 September - Centennial Research Scholar Lecture

The Centennial Research Scholar Lectures Series begins at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 21 in Birkeland Alumni Lounge with Dr. George Connell (Philosophy). Obadiah Ballinger ’05 and Casey Crosbie ’04 will assist in presenting “Athens and Jerusalem: The Bible and Philosophy of Religion.” Until recently, philosophy of religion has proceeded almost entirely in the absence of specific references to sacred scriptures. This practice has specific historical roots, and it has served to differentiate philosophy of religion from theology. Over the last 25 years, however, philosophers of religion have increasingly often engaged biblical texts. This objective of this project has been to survey, categorize and assess this new direction in the philosophy of religion. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

14 September - Faculty-as-a-Whole

Please note that Faculty-as-a-Whole will not take place during Community Time on Friday, September 17. A department meeting has been scheduled instead. The first Faculty-as-a-Whole meeting is scheduled for December 3.

Nonnie Tangen Academic Affairs
