16 June - U.S. Cultural Diversity Outcomes
Faculty Colleagues
The U.S. Cultural Diversity working group has met and developed draft
outcomes to be used in relation to the new core course on U.S. Cultural
Diversity. Other working groups are meeting this summer to develop learning
outcomes for the Global Perspectives group and the Exploration areas.
Each task force was charged with soliciting faculty input during the summer.
This e-mail is our attempt to do this. Please review the learning outcomes and
send your responses to krejci@cord.edu. They will be routed to the entire
committee which will aid our efforts in revising the learning outcomes and
submitting them to the Core and Curriculum committee who will report to Senate.
Regarding both the U.S. Cultural Diversity and the International and Global
Perspectives courses, Senate legislation reads: "The perspectives expectation
will be met by students taking existing courses in the core, in the majors, or
through electives. A major focus of these courses will be the perspectives
topic."
The original senate legislation regarding the U.S. Cultural Diversity course
reads: "Perspectives in U.S. Cultural Diversity: Courses that fulfill
this requirement will allow students to consider social and political forces
that shape people's experiences in the U.S., and to understand the conditions of
individuals and groups separated from a dominant culture by race/ethnicity and
gender and other social issues such as class, religion or sexual orientation.
Domestic May Seminars, semester off campus experiences, and Exploration Seminars
are eligible, with Core Committee approval, to satisfy this expectation."
The outcomes should be interpreted as the benchmarks that will be used to
gauge a successful course in this area. As per the Senate discussion, no
specific pedagogical approaches are required nor implied.
Courses qualifying as fulfilling Perspectives in U.S. Cultural Diversity will
have the following Student Outcomes as part of the course:
- Students recognize that the human experience, including life
opportunities, is shaped by race, ethnicity and gender.
- Students demonstrate an understanding of how the human experience,
including life opportunities, is grounded in race, ethnicity and gender.
- Students can engage in informed dialogue on current issues related to
race, ethnicity and gender and other social issues (e.g., related to class,
religion, sexual orientation).
Thank you for your reflections and reactions.

5 June - Division Chair for Core & Integrative Studies
Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to announce that Gregg Muilenburg has agreed to serve as
Division Chair for Core and Integrative Studies during the next academic year.
Gregg will play a key role as we initiate the new FYE course sequence and
develop the criteria for the other courses. I want to thank him for his
willingness to take on this role and look forward to the leadership he will
provide as we initiate and refine our new core curriculum. Gregg is passionate
about education in the core and I value his ideas on how to bring about the new
core at Concordia.
Linda Johnson reconsidered her acceptance to serve in this position. I thank
her for considering this type of service to the college.
