27 July - Global Perspectives draft outcomes
Faculty Colleagues
The Global Perspectives working group has met and developed draft outcomes to
be used in relation to the new core course on International and Global
Perspectives. Other working groups are meeting this summer to develop learning
outcomes for the US Cultural Diversity group and the Exploration areas.
Each task force was charged with soliciting faculty input during the summer.
This e-mail is our attempt to do this. Please review the learning outcomes and
send your responses to krejci@cord.edu.
They will be routed to the entire committee which will aid our efforts in
revising the learning outcomes and submitting them to the Core and Curriculum
committee who will report to Senate.
Regarding both the International and Global Perspectives and the U.S.
Cultural Diversity courses, Senate legislation reads:
"The perspectives expectation will be met by students taking existing
courses in the core, in the majors, or through electives. A major focus of
these courses will be the perspectives topic.
The original senate legislation regarding the International and Global
Perspectives course reads:
International and Global Perspectives: Courses that fulfill this
requirement will allow students to reflect on issues of international and
global significance in order that they might understand more fully their
role as thoughtful and informed persons engaged in the affairs of the world.
International May Seminars, semester off campus programs, and courses with
international Exploration Seminars are eligible, with core committee
approval, to satisfy this expectation.
The outcomes should be interpreted as the benchmarks that will be used to
gauge a successful course in this area. As per the Senate discussion, no
specific pedagogical approaches are required nor implied.
Courses qualifying as fulfilling Perspectives in International and Global
Perspectives will have the following Student Outcomes as part of the course:
Draft Learning Outcomes
Global Perspectives Courses
Summer 2006
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of at least one topic of
international and global significance.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of at least one other
culture's perspective related to the topic.
- Students will become actively engaged in a topic of international
and global significance with a broader community.
Thank you for your reflections and reactions.
