General Chemistry Laboratory II (Chem 128L)
 Spring Semester 2009

Sulfadrug Resource Page:  Here

With the recent events of the flood and Concordia's closing for two weeks, I have reevaluated the schedule for the remainder of the semester and have come to We will not be doing any additional lab periods with the exception of the Tuesday make-up day to cancel out for the blizzard since the Tuesday labs are one period behind and the make-up day was already scheduled.

This has been a hard decision to make as the progress the class has made in the research projects has been very impressive and I was more than taken back with the effort that the research teams have been putting in on this. The level of enthusiasm was also tangible and it seemed most of the class were genuinely driven in working on their own projects which was one of the aims of introducing this style of lab. So it hurts to have to cut short the capstone of the General Chemistry Lab Course but we have to do it. So the plan is as follows:

With the exception of the Tuesday sections who will have an additional lab day, each section will have one more lab period next week (pre-Easter) in which they should aim for completing all experiments. The following week, the Tuesday section will have their last lab period while all other sections will not be meeting but this is the time you should be working on getting together the final talk and paper (more details will be available in next weeks lab so stay tuned). In this week following Easter, if you or your group wish to meet with me to talk about your data, I will be available all week for this during the day- all sections, no matter who the instructor of record should meet with me, with the other faculty working on getting their other classes caught up, it's more convenient for me to meet with the groups no matter what lab section you are in - I will be in my office, the lab or the stockroom that week or email me with a time if you cannot find me

The following week is the last week of lab and will consist of handing in a copy of your paper which I also want an electronic copy of emailed to me, the groups will each give a peer and instructor evaluated talk about what they achieved and learned and what more work they could have done and then we will check out the drawers and that's it for 128L

See the revised schedule below or email me with any questions. Before closing this I also want to say a big thank-you to all of you involved in fighting the flood in the past few weeks. As a Fargo dweller, I spent most of my time on the other side of the river filling sandbags but the efforts of the Concordia students particularly in that of the Chem Club helping our secretary Julie build her dike up north of Moorhead were a key part of helping the area weather record breaking disaster conditions. Be proud of your efforts and see you in lab.

Lab Makeup Procedure:

You are required to complete all the experiments as part of the 127L lab course. However, due to reasons of illness, scheduling conflicts etc, sometimes you will miss a lab. To schedule a time to carry out the lab, you should contact Dr Wyllie as soon as possible. If you know in advance you are missing a lab, let Dr Wyllie know the week before, if you miss the lab itself such as for illness, contact Dr Wyllie as soon as you can.

Unless there are exceptional circumstances, labs must be made up the same week they are missed. The regular lab times are listed below and you should try to make up the lab in one of these, if these times do not work, include this information when you contact Dr Wyllie.

The procedure for making up a missed lab is given below, if this is not followed, you will not get the credit for the lab you make-up.

Email the following information to Dr Wyllie (wyllie@cord.edu)

Name:

Lab Section (Time / Instructor):

Experiment to be Made-up:

When you plan to make it up:

Dr Wyllie will then email you a confirmation and you should attend the stated section for the make-up. In the lab, there will be a form you will get from the TA with the above information which you will attach to your entrance and exit quizzes and have signed by the instructor at the end of the lab. This is left in the lab to be collected and distributed to your instructor by Dr Wyllie. If you do not have this form, you will not be credited for the lab. You cannot just turn up to any lab for making up an experiment, we have a very large class this year so we have to manage resources and lab space. In addition, it allows better tracking of lab make-ups so you can be sure your grade is being credited for the lab.
