What is Sigma Tau Delta (STD)?

According to the national organization, "Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature."

Sigma Tau Delta is one the largest members in the Association of College Honor Societies, with over 600 active chapters, more than 900 faculty sponsors, and 7,000 new members annually. STD is a resource to help make career decisions and an opportunity to be recognized for outstanding achievements, to enrich one's education, and to advance one's career.

Membership Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be majoring or minoring (or the equivalent) in the discipline of English.

  2. Must have a minimum of 2 college courses in English language or literature beyond the usual requirements of freshman English.

  3. Must have a B or equivalent average in English.

  4. Must rank in the highest 35% of his/her class in general scholarship, historically above a 3.4.

  5. Must have completed at least 3 semesters or 5 quarters of college course work.

  6. Must be currently enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student.

DUES/COSTS 

Upon admittance into Sigma Tau Delta, you will receive a letter of acceptance and will then be required to pay a one-time fee for your international dues ($37 in 2007).  Our Concordia chapter determines its dues annually (usually $5-$10).  The honor cord is optional ($9 in 2007).

Recent Events

Alexandra Lundahl presented her work entitled "'Trains'- Writing and Editing Fiction" at the National Convention.  Her presentation included a character analysis, a description of the writing process, and reflections on the lessons that fiction composition has taught her.

The Spring 2006 Induction Ceremony was held on March 25, at which twelve new members were received.

The Fall 2005 Induction Ceremony for three new members was held on Friday, October 28.

Mitch Marr, a Sigma Tau Delta member and 2005 graduate, had a poem he wrote in Bill Snyder's class accepted for publication in the upcoming issue of the Rectangle, Sigma Tau Delta's creative writing journal. Congratulations!

Concordia's chapter, Alpha Lambda Phi, is under the advisement of Nancy Jones and inducted three new members Thursday, December 2, 2004.  

Sigma Tau Delta members and the English Club got together with anyone who wants to participate to read Jamaica Kincaid's Lucy.  The author was the featured writer at Unheard Melodies, the 2005 STD conference in Kansas City, March 16-20, 2005, where three Concordia students--Alissa Clobes '04, Angela Pfeiffer '06, and Virginia Piper '05--presented their work. Clobes was awarded the distinction of Sigma Tau Delta's Outstanding Alumni Essay Award.
