Choose one of the following topics and develop a critical
analysis in a 3-4 page essay:
1. Apply the definition of racism and the analysis of
power to Malcolm X. Be sure that you are distinguishing
individual race prejudice (or bigotry) from the racist misuse of the systematic
power of institutions (Defining Racism MCARI handout-- see also
Two Views of Racism and Solutions MCARI handout). Be sure also that you
attend to all three levels of systematic power: "p1 = power
over people of color; p2 = power which gives privilege and advantage
to white people; and p3 = power which socializes all of
us into the racial rules" (Systemic Power and Race MCARI handout).
2. Discuss the theme of the need for self-determination
within the black community in Malcolm X in relation to our discussions of
institutional racism and white privilege.
3. Drawing on the readings on institutional racism and white privilege and the Autobiography of Malcolm X, discuss what must be done to eliminate racism in your lifetime.
4. Pinpoint the definitions and descriptions and illustrations of racism identified by Malcolm X and then compare these definitions with those discussed in class. What conclusions do you draw from the similarities and differences?
5. Compare and contrast The Autobiography of Malcolm X with Augustine's Confessions.
6.
Additional topics may be possible provided they focus on a textual analysis
related to our focus on institutional racism. Please discuss your topic with
Jonathan by November 20th.
