French Activities for Students

French Club

French Club is open to all students who want to use the French language and organize activities outside the classroom. In addition to regular meetings, special events have included activities such as dinners, boules matches, watching French movies, singing French Christmas carols, and going to St. Boniface, near Winnipeg, for the Festival du Voyageur.

Club de Gastronomie

This club is open to all students with a desire to discover France through its food.  Students create the menu with the help of Mme Walters, buy the food, and then come to Mme Walter's house to cook and eat!  If you enjoy "la haute cuisine," this is the place for you!

La Maison Française

La Maison Française is an apartment building located in the International Center on 8th St. This residence is normally open to juniors and seniors, but sophomores may live there as space permits. The native assistant lives in 'la Maison.' Residents of 'la Maison' get together for activities and French-style meals and, as much as is possible, maintain French as the language in common areas.

(For more information contact Mme Véronique Walters)

After-school French Classes for Elementary Children

Every year one or more of the elementary schools in the area organize French classes for their pupils. Usually these are staffed by students from the Concordia French Department.

Exploration Seminar to France

French National Honor's Society

May Seminar to France/ Cameroon

Every year the French Department organizes a one-month travel and study seminar to France and/or another French-speaking country. Unlike high school guided tours, this trip places great responsibility on the individual student to develop the language and travel skills necessary to travel alone in France. For this reason enrollment is limited to students in their sophomore, junior, and senior years and who have had at least French 212 prior to departure in May.

(For information for May Seminar 2007, contact Dr. Gay Rawson)

Summer Practicum in France

Students who participate in a French May Seminar are given the opportunity to stay on in France for an additional 6 weeks to live with a French family and be immersed in the culture and the language. This is worth a course credit toward the major.

French International Business Program

Concordia College has an exchange program with the lnstitut de Gestion of the Université de Rennes. During the second semester, selected seniors who have majored in both business and French complete their studies in France at this school in Rennes, followed by an internship in a French business. Simultaneously, a group of selected students from Rennes study business classes at Concordia and do internships here.
