Our seminar is a uniquely European experience. Where can you speak
French and German while enjoying foie gras, sauerkraut, quiche or
flammkuchen? In Strasbourg, France, the exciting crossroads of French
and German history, politics and culture. Located in the Alsace region
along France’s eastern border to Germany, visitors experience
Strasbourg’s unique fusion of French and German influences from its
French country architecture to the ostentatious neoclassical
19th-century Prussian designs of the German quarter. For more than a
thousand years, Strasbourg has transcended national boundaries. The
Strasbourg Cathedral, one of Europe’s largest and most impressive
structures, attests to the city’s importance as a former free city of
the Holy Roman Empire. Although Strasbourg withstood many generations of
warfare between France and Germany, it has enjoyed peace and prosperity
since World War II. Now the site of the European Union Parliament and
the Council of Europe, Strasbourg symbolizes European unity perhaps more
poignantly than any other city on the continent. Our visit will help us
witness firsthand not only artifacts of European history, but also its
lasting effects on the current political system. We will also travel to
a former concentration camp at Natzwiller, the restored 12th century
castle fortress Haut Königsbourg, the French city of Colmar, the Swiss
city of Basel and the German resort of Baden-Baden.
