How Do I Import References from Library Databases Into RefWorks?

These directions apply to the following:

  • MnPALS (library catalog)

1. Conduct a search in MnPALS.

2. Check the boxes to select your items. Click on Save/Mail. (See illustration.)

3. When the "E-Mail or Save" screen appears, select RefWorks Format from the "Record format" list. Click on "Go" to save records.

4. On the next screen, click on "Save Selected" to save the file on your computer.

5. Go to File and Save As... to save the file on your computer. (Note: Select a location on your computer so that you will be able to find the file during the import process.)

6. Log in to RefWorks.

7. From the References dropdown menu at the top left of your screen, select Import.

8. On the Import screen, change the Import Filter/Data Source field to Ex Libris ALEPH and the Database to MnPALS Catalog (Opac Format). Then click on on the Browse button to locate the file you saved from MnPALS. (See illustration.)

9. Click on the Import button to move the MnPALS citations into RefWorks. (You will see a "references imported" confirmation when your citations have successfully been transferred.)

10. Your imported references should appear in the Last Imported folder within RefWorks.
