I am a new International employee, what do I need to do?

If you are a student, contact the Laurie De Vries at 299-3153 devries@cord.edu to complete a W-4 and other necessary paperwork. If you are a faculty or staff employee, contact Kim Walerius at 299-3328 or walerius@cord.edu to complete a W-4 and other necessary paperwork.

What documents do I need to bring?

Documents you will need to bring may include:

  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • Individuals on F-1 immigration status bring your I-20 and I-94 card.
  • Individuals on F-2 immigration status are not eligible to work.
  • Individuals on J-1 immigration status bring your DS2019 and I-94 card.
  • Individuals on J-2 immigration status bring your employment authorization card.
  • Individuals on H-1B immigration status bring your I-797 form.
  • Individuals on TN immigration status bring your I-94 card.

What about tax treaty information?

Countries may have a tax treaty that would limit the amount of Federal Withholding from your payroll check. Please check with the Payroll Department to see if your home country has a tax treaty or refer to IRS Publication 515 Withholding of Tax on Nonresident Aliens and Foreign Entities.

I am an F1 student, how many hours can I work while school is in session?

As an F1 student, you can work no more than 20 hours a week on campus while school is in session.

Concordia College is considered one employer. If you are working in more than one department, you will need to keep the total hours worked under the weekly limit.

I am an F1 student, how many hours can I work while on break from school?

As an F-1 student, you can work up to 40 hours a week on campus during the summer and on any other breaks during the school year.

What if there is a change in my immigration status?

Any time you have a change in your immigration status or receive an extension on your stay, you need to bring in your new documentation to the Payroll Department. Failure to notify Payroll of a change in your immigration status could interrupt your work authorization and/or make you ineligible for employment.

  • Maintaining your Visa Status - You must understand the INS requirements in order to maintain your visa status. A student who does not maintain his or her visa status may fall into a category of being unlawfully present in the United States. When this occurs, the student could face penalties of being denied entrance into the United States for a period of three to ten years.

I don't have my social security card, how do I get one?
I have a name change, how do I get a corrected Social Security card
(name change and same number)?
