COURSES
JANUARY 4-APRIL 30

Students will be able to complete four full courses in the 2nd semester program of study in Greece.

World Discovery 380
A full course, taken as an elective and team taught by Profs. Shawn Carruth and Larry Alderink. In preparation for our study and travel in Greece and Egypt, we will study ancient Greek history, archaeology, and literature, including the Odyssey  by Homer and Ancient Greece: A Political, Social, and Cultural History  by Sarah B. Pomeroy, Stanley M. Burstein, Walter Donlan, and Jennifer Tolbert Roberts.  We will also tour archaeological sites, museums, churches, monasteries, synagogues, and mosques.

Religion 318X
A full course, taught by Prof. Shawn Carruth.  Images and status of women in Western and Arabic literature will be investigated from an interdisciplinary perspective, with attention to the psychosocial and spiritual formation of contemporary men and women.

Religion 334
A full course, taught by Prof. Larry Alderink.  Jewish, Christian, and Muslim religions will be examined through study of scriptures and works written by representative of the various faiths, including Greek Orthodoxy and (Egyptian) Coptic Orthodoxy..

Independent Study
This course allows wide choice in topic, method, assignments, and faculty.  Students are free to work with a professor in their major, minor, or to do an elective.  Our contact in Crete, Ms. Fotini Georgiadou, will begin searching for opportunities for academic and practical experience that will contribute to the course; Ms. Georgiadou should be informed by mid-October of the topics of study so she can make the connections for us to begin work soon after we arrive in the first week of February 2000.  Students are encouraged to meet soon with Profs. Alderink and Carruth to discuss their independent study projects, and to work closely with the academic advisors with whom they will do their work.
