A Virtual Tour of the 1999 May Seminar:
Sponsored by the Religion Dept. and Women's Studies Program

Brief description
Have you ever wanted to worship in or visit a medieval cathedral, experience life in an ancient monastery, or live in a castle?  Here is your opportunity!  The "Sisters of Faith" May Seminar will explore what life was like in Medieval Europe by encountering the places where Medieval people, especially women, worshipped, prayed, played, fought battles, and experienced miracles!

Come join us as we travel through France visiting the most beautiful cathedrals in the world (like Chartres and Notre Dame), tour Paris, retrace the steps of Joan of Arc, see the famous Louvre Museum, and stay in monasteries.

In Italy besides visiting the beautiful forests of Tuscany and the home of Clare and Francis of Assisi we will take in the wonders of Rome, the Vatican, and Monte Cassino (one of the oldest monasteries in the world).

In Germany we will float down the Rhine in a boat, stay in castles, and visit the monastery of the amazing musician and artist, the Abbess Hildegard of Bingen.

Finally, in England we will explore London, Buckingham Palace, Canterbury Cathedral, the church of Julian of Norwich, and the tower of London where Henry VIII’s wives lost their heads!

This seminar is sponsored by the Religion Department and the Women’s studies program and is led by Dr. Roy Hammerling, a medievalist and religious historian and Dr. Shawn Carruth, a faculty member in the Woman’s studies program and the Religion Department..
